You could be forgiven for thinking that this post is about Grow Your Own, well you'd be wrong. I'm continuing with my vegetable theme today and have decided, based on the success of my Carol Klein 'Interview', to ask a few more people that dreaded question.
" If you were a vegetable what would you be?"
The thing is that I'm actually interested. At flower shows we see lots of flowers launched and named after eminent people, you only need to read Graham Rice's New Plants blog to see what I mean, but what about vegetables? You rarely see a new spud named after anyone and I think this is a missed opportunity. So all those veg breeders should take note, there are quite a few people who would be flattered to be named after vegetables.
So there I was wandering through the Floral Marquee when I spied fellow Garden Writer (and lots more besides) Martin Fish. When I asked him he was pretty quick off the mark. "I'd be cucumber because they are cool and slinky," then changed his mind, and asked "which is not me at all is it?" paused, and said, "No I'd be a sprout". His final answer? No. Mostly because I pointed out that most people don't like sprouts, to which he replied he would work on the image of the sprout and make everyone love them and eat them. He could see I wasn't convinced and came up with his final answer. "I'd be a cabbage, is that boring? There's a variety called 'Spitfire', it's a really fast growing, pointed cabbage and tasty too."
Another interesting answer. I promise not to get too obsessed, but there may be more on this theme, especially as it is raining still and it's proving difficult to get anyone to stop and chat in the pouring rain. Maybe it's the questions I'm asking? But when I ask them what they most like about the show, they have either just arrived or have hardly seen anything due to the rain.
