Hen Pecked? You be the judge

I caught up with Joe Swift this morning outside the NACRO Ladies that Lunch garden, which was complete with some live ex battery hens exploring the concept of real grass. Joe didn't seem too impressed with the chickens. "Tatton Park is a nice day out for a chicken as long as their batteries don't run out," he quipped.

"I'd never eat a chicken sandwich," he lied. "In fact I was on the allotment the other day, and there was a chicken wandering across my plot, which is good because it might eat the slugs, but I was eating a chicken sandwich at the time. It gave me a really funny look. It might have been that chicken's mum I was eating."

What a terrible thing to say.

I tried to get him to bond with a hen, but Joe simply shied away, "I'm not scared of them," he protested, " but I don't want to pick one up." There's a word for that! Think it might be "chicken".

What he didn't realise was that I'd captured his portrait with a cockerel poking out the top of his head.
