Towering Spires of Flowers at Hyde Hall

Posted by clairecampbell on 29 May 2009 at 09:54 AM

If you are visiting Hyde Hall this weekend, then don't forget to look up as you walk around, as the garden seems to be erupting with lofty flower spikes everywhere.  On the Dry Garden, the silken silver foliage and bright yellow blooms of Verbascum olympicum  make it look as though the area is being guarded by strange botanical sentinels. On the Shrub Rose Border, the assault on the senses begins with a fragrance that envelops you and ends with the sight of spires of Eremurus robustus reaching skyward.

Hi, I regularly grow Verbascum Olympicum with quite good results. This year however I have one plant in particular over 10ft tall and has been in flower it seems for weeks on end. The label for the plant stated it would only grow to approx 6ft tall.

So, is this a record or just pure luck?

Following on from this. No doubt it will produce seed and because this plant seems very strong and upright I hope to sow the seed.

Could anyone tell me please the best time to sow the seed. In pots? straight into the garden?

Hopefully in pots as it would be nice to give some away.

Thanks in anticipation.

Keith.
