As we all know, its no good growing crops in your garden that you don't like and won't use, and obviously the same applies with school gardens. What do you do if you have lots of (pupil) gardeners looking after a patch? How do you include everyone's choices, even in a small space? Have a vote of course! This is just what we have been doing on my some my initial school visits at St Mary's School, Horam and Downs Park School, Portslade by Sea.
Rather than bombard the pupils with text heavy seed catalogues, I selected a range of photos in different categories (root crops, soft fruit, flowers, scarecrows etc..) arranged them on A4 sheets, laminated and stuck to garden canes. I also took along a selection of real vegetable props for them to touch and squidge! Visual choices are much better for many of the SEN pupils I am working with, making the activity inclusive for both readers and non-readers.
