Watch spring unfold at Harlow Carr!

Posted by Harlow Carr Gardeners on 24 Jan 2011 at 10:26 AM

The temperatures are rising (slowly but surely!), the dull, grey shadows are lifting from the skies as spots of blue are beginning to emerge, and the days are getting ever-so-slightly longer. Spring is just around the corner and Harlow Carr is the perfect place to watch winter fade and the new season burst into bloom, as the bulbs finally rear their heads. The snowdrops are beginning to peek through the soil and the green shoots of the daffodils are clear across the garden promising a spectacular ray of sunshine come spring. In the Gardens Through Time, container plantings of Muscari have already begun to produce shoots, leaving us looking forward to seeing the brilliant blue grape-like flowers in the coming months. In the winter garden Hamamelis, most commonly known as Witch Hazel, is in clear abundance, sitting in clusters of vivid yellow and dark orange. When the sunlight hits them, they will give off their rich scent, promising an intense sensory experience. And of course, the Winter Walk’s vibrant colours bring welcome cheer to the garden come rain or shine. Although the area has year round appeal, there is particular interest in the autumn and winter months. Small early-flowering spring bulbs, such as Scilla and Iris are present, and the fiery stems of Cornus provide eruptions of colour. The silver stems of the Perovskia ‘Blue Spire’ (Harlow Carr’s ‘Plant of the Month’) present a perfect contrast and, along with the bark of the Silver Birch, truly shine over winter.
