The festive season got off to a flying start this year at Harlow Carr with Santa whizzing in from Lapland with a couple of his trainee reindeer and assorted helpers last weekend. An unprecedented number of visitors watched them arrive with their sleigh on a perfect sunny and frosty winter day and joined in the festive procession following his sleigh around the garden to his grotto.
Although the day was extremely popular, there was a chance for many of the children to see the reindeer close up and even stroke a nose or two (although not a red one as Rudolph was getting some rest before the big day!). Some fabulous carol singers helped everyone get into the festive spirit, with storytelling and a fairy quiz trail all adding to the atmosphere.

We are absolutely delighted that so many children came to see Santa and his reindeer - the event seems to be getting more and more popular each year as word spreads, and with this in mind we'll be trying to persuade Santa to go on an even wider tour round the garden next year!

Even though Santa has gone back to wrap up the rest of his presents, throughout December you can also enjoy the family quiz trail, the perfect reason to get everyone outdoors for a while, or you may prefer the Winter Interest Trail - a self-guided garden tour that highlights the season's eye-catching features, including some wonderfully fragranced plants that are at their peak in winter. Sculptures old and new can be discovered - look out for the new angel and especially the gigantic hanging mistletoe... don't forget to bring your favourite ‘friend' with you for a Christmas kiss!
