Thanks Nerinist, interesting. I have to say that when I looked at Mark's varieties in the trial at Wisley they were not looking as good as some of the others. But it's only their first season and assessment hasn't even started yet.

Not all of Dr Bridgen's Alstroemerias have proved equally satisfactory in my garden ~ 'Freedom', which was widely available a couple of years ago is definitely not hardy, whereas 'Sweet Laura' does seem to be

Unfortunately, sometimes sparrows nip off the flowers but perhaps those fiery buds will put them off.

Great, another Mahonia!! I've always valued these shrubs for their wildlife-attracting amenities--birds love those berries and nest in their protective foliage.
