The 2011/2012 RHS Plant Finder is now out and I’ve been looking at this year’s new entries which stocked by the most nurseries. These are the newcomers most widely available at different nurseries across the country.

Top of the list is Actaea ‘Misty Blue’, available from more RHS Plant Finder nurseries than any other newcomer, and which I wrote up Actaea ‘Misty Blue’ here in February. The second most widely available is a very impressive new hardy geranium, Geranium ‘Midnight Clouds’. I’ll be featuring more in the next few posts.

‘Midnight Clouds’ is one of an elite few plants with dark purple foliage and white flowers. It’s a neat plant, just 14-16in/35-40cm high, and the foliage is dark velvet purple, rather like Geranium ‘Midnight Reiter’. But the flowers are white. It was found by Dutch perennial wizard Luc Klinkhamer.

Geranium 'Midnight Clouds' was a lucky seedling from myself that I found five years ago,” Luc told me. “In that area I had some Geranium 'Midnight Reiter' also G. maculatum 'Espresso' and 'Elizabeth Ann', as well as the plant later named ‘Midnight Blues'.

“It’s not a sister of 'Midnight Blues', which was raised by Thierry Delabroye, who’s also raised so many good heucheras and hellebores. But because we introduced it together on an evening when we were drinking a good bottle of French wine we had the names for both varieties.

“From spring till June,” he said, “it has nice dark leaves then has more green in it – but with no mildew. And it has a very interesting big white flower. Flowering time like the most of those types is June to August. This is a very strong and fast growing Geranium.”

You can order plants of Geranium ‘Midnight Clouds’ from these RHS Plant Finder nurseries.
