What a glorious weekend - lovely, sunny weather, with just a hint of cold weather at night to get the nerves of anyone with seedlings and young plants jangling. So, it was a weekend in the garden, getting ready for Easter.
In the veg garden there was plenty to do.
The seeds for the lettuce trial that were sown on 23 March had germinated on Thursday, so it was time to thin them out to one seedling per cell, just as they're doing in the 'proper' trial at Wisley. I decided to take the risk and move them to the coldframe to start off the hardening off process immediately.
The tomatoes, peppers and basil sown a couple of weeks ago were also in need of attention; the tomatoes and peppers were transplanted individually to 9cm (3.5in) pots and the basil into P24 cell trays. They were also moved into the cold frame.
I've now spent two anxious evenings rushing out with fleece to the coldframe to give all the plants there some added protection - an activity I'm probably going to have to repeat for at least another week or so.
The first planting of first early potatoes was made in one of the raised beds.
The first sowing of lettuce and salad leaves in the Access frame were again thinned out - the resulting thinnings making very tasty and, in some cases, spicy nibbles - nothing goes to waste!
I can't wait for the Easter break, but sadly won't be able to spend the whole time in the garden; the deadline for my book draws ever closer and on Easter Sunday I'll be presenting the new Sunday gardening programme on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire from 11am to 1pm - tune in if you can.
