Red hot pokers cause a stir among our feathered friends

Posted by Chris Bailes on 15 May 2008 at 02:41 PM

For the last couple of years we've seen more and more birds 'discovering' that the red hot pokers in the garden at RHS Rosemoor are a good source of nectar. Last year we saw mostly greattits doing this, but as you can see this year the greater spotted woodpeckers are getting in on the act as well!

It will be interesting to see if this becomes 'learned behaviour', as I'm sure that when the young birds leave the nest their parents will introduce them to this rich energy source.

Great picture! I never had greater spotted woodpeckers down as nectar feeders... Dare I ask (gulp): are they, and the great *** you mention, perhaps hunting for aphids amongst the flowers?! Or are they really sucking nectar from the flowers themselves?

Barry Phillips in the Herbarium has been collecting Kniphofias from the trial at Wisley and finds copious amounts of nectar falling out of the open flowers.  Known to be a food source for sunbirds in their native habitat, South Africa.
